Websterian Society was a literary and debating club for students at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University). Named for orator and senator Daniel Webster, the society was founded in ca. 1859. The Wirt Society was the Websterians' rival for members and in annual debate competitions. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
